Welcome to the Writer’s Room.

This is a space for people who write, and for people who love understanding how writing works. Here, I break down the craft without overcomplicating it and share what’s happening behind the scenes of my own work.

In this section, we’ll talk about:

• how I build believable characters

• how I layer faith into fiction without preaching

• structure, POV, dialogue, and tension

• writing as both art and discipline

Think of this as pulling up a chair while the work is being made, honest, practical, and grounded in process.

When did you discover that you knew how to write?

Here’s my story...

I had always loved books.

I read so many books growing up, my mother got tired of buying. She enrolled me in a book club.

In secondary school (high school), I read all the recommended books for literature students even though I was in science class.

Reading was my favourite way to pass the time.

I loved a good story, so it was only natural that I was good at making stories up. I would sit and daydream of another world. I would imagine characters and wish that I had the ability to bring them to life. I would fall in love with the people in the books that I read and desire to be a part of their world.

Surprisingly, I never really wrote any stories down for fun. The writing was strictly for English Composition class. It was in one of these classes that I discovered my writing talent.

Our English teacher, Mrs. Atilola (the best English teacher I have had in this life), had given us an assignment. Being a good student, I did the assignment to the best of my ability. She was really impressed by the way, because when she returned the scripts in the next class, she held onto my own and read it to the hearing of the entire class.

Doing good work was not new to me, but hearing my writing read in another person’s voice was. As she read my words back at me, something clicked. It sounded so good.

“Did I write that?” I asked myself.

Well obviously I did.

I discovered I knew how to write in English class some 15 years ago but writing was not something I did seriously until like some 5 years ago.

If anyone had asked me if I could write stories or books then, I would have said no.

But if I had an English exam that came with a composition question, I would roll up my sleeves and write a story or an essay that would be graded.

Why did I think I could write essays for English class but didn't believe I could write books and short stories?
